Nadis are the subtle channels through which prana (life-force energy) flows in the energetic body. Yogic and tantric traditions describe over 72,000 nadis branching throughout the system, carrying energy much like rivers feed an ocean. Three primary nadis, ida, pingala, and sushumna, are most central, weaving around the chakras and governing the flow of mind, body, and spirit. When nadis are clear, prana flows freely, creating vitality, balance, and awakening. When blocked, stagnation manifests as physical illness, emotional imbalance, or spiritual disconnection.
In this foundation, we’ll explore nadis as the channels of prana, the three main nadis and their functions, and their role in healing and awakening.
Nadis are not physical nerves but subtle energetic pathways interwoven with the body. Nadis remind us that life is flow, and when energy channels are clear, the whole system thrives.
🌊 Energy Circulation
Just as blood vessels carry blood, nadis circulate prana to nourish tissues and consciousness.
🧘 Subtle Anatomy
Nadis connect chakras, ensuring that energy flows in harmony through body, mind, and spirit.
🌀 Blockages
Stress, trauma, toxins, or emotional stagnation can obstruct nadis, weakening vitality.
While thousands of nadis exist, three are considered primary, forming the foundation of yogic practice. Together, ida and pingala weave around the spine like a double helix, crossing at each chakra, and uniting in balance through the sushumna.
🌙 Ida Nadi
Runs along the left side of the spine. Feminine, lunar, cooling, receptive. Governs intuition, rest, and emotional flow. Shadow: lethargy, over-sensitivity, avoidance.
☀️ Pingala Nadi
Runs along the right side of the spine. Masculine, solar, warming, active. Governs logic, vitality, and outward action. Shadow: restlessness, aggression, burnout.
🕉 Sushumna Nadi
Central channel through the spine. Neutral, balanced, and spiritual. Pathway of Kundalini rising and union of ida and pingala. Blocked when the system is dominated by imbalance.
The purification and balance of nadis are essential for both health and spiritual practice. Nadis are the rivers of the subtle body, when they run clear, energy flows freely, awakening vitality, clarity, and spiritual illumination.
🌬 Pranayama (Breathwork)
Alternate nostril breathing balances ida and pingala, clearing blockages and calming the nervous system.
🧘 Asana and Movement
Yoga postures and mindful movement release tension and restore pranic circulation in the nadis.
🎶 Sound and Mantra
Chanting and vibration clear stagnation in subtle channels, tuning them to higher frequencies.
🔥 Kundalini Awakening
When ida and pingala are balanced, prana flows into sushumna, allowing Kundalini to rise through the chakras into expanded awareness.
