ABOUT

Bananatex® is the world’s first durable, technical fabric made purely from the naturally grown Abacá banana plants. Cultivated in the Philippine highlands within a natural ecosystem of sustainable mixed agriculture and forestry, the plant is self-sufficient, requires no pesticides, fertilizer or extra water. These qualities have allowed it to contribute to reforestation in areas once eroded due to monocultural palm plantations, whilst enhancing biodiversity and the economic prosperity of its farmers.

ABACÁ

The plant’s inherent properties align with our commitment to environmental, economic and social sustainability.

CUTTING THE STALKS

Each Abacá plant has several stalks that can be harvested once a year, and regenerate fully within one year. The first step is “topping”: cutting the leaves, then “tumbling” the stalks. The leaves are left to decompose, creating a natural fertilizer.

STRIPPING

The stripping is handled at the harvesting site, and the fibers are “combed” to separate them from one another.

SORTING

The raw fibers are sorted at the warehouse of the farmers cooperative.

Coral Gardeners

ABOUT

OUR MISSION
We are on a mission to revolutionize ocean conservation and create a global movement to save the world’s coral reefs through active reef restoration, awareness activities and innovative solutions, developed by our CG labs.

REEF RESTORATION

100,870 CORALS PLANTED
The core of our work is built around coral reef restoration. Using the latest techniques and methods, our team of gardeners grow and plant resilient corals to revive reef ecosystems. Our aim is to expand restoration around the world and empower the local communities to become coral gardeners as part of a bluer economy.

INNOVATION

6 CONNECTED REEFS
The CG Labs is developing novel tools and techniques to further our coral knowledge and improve our coral reef restoration and monitoring methodology. Our scientists and engineers are continually working together to optimize and scale up coral reef conservation in an open-source, collaborative and effective way.

AWARENESS

455 MILLION PEOPLE REACHED
We raise awareness to inspire people to take action for the reef and tackle climate change. Locally, we educate the islanders on the importance of coral reefs by involving them in hands-on workshops. Globally, we use various medias and unconventional collaborations to reach the world and make ocean conservation impossible to ignore.

Juan Sharks

ABOUT

Juan finished his degree in fine art and photography at BYUH in Laie, Hawaii, just 20 minutes from where he grew up on the North Shore of Oahu. Juan is one of the founders of One Ocean Research and Diving, Water Inspired Conservation,  and now on the board of Save The Sea Turtles International nonprofit foundation.

Juan grew up surfing in front of his families home at chuns reef in the center of the north shore of Oahu.  Although he was taught to SCUBA and freedive as early as seven years old he didn't really focus on diving until it was a way to heal his back after a zipline accident left him paralyzed.  After learning to walk again and slowly regaining his strength after multiple surgeries, his doctor advised him to take a break from surfing, but Juan grew up in the ocean and couldn't stay away. He took up diving regularly and became a divemaster and traveled the world with SeaShepard to help combat illegal fishing and whaling in 1999. It was during the SharkWater campaign to the Galapagos and Cocos that he truly realized that sharks needed more help.  From then on he began purposely diving with sharks on a regular basis and has worked with them year round ever since trying to help change the perception others had of them as monsters into a respectful and healthy appreciation for them as apex predators, important for marine ecosystems, and in need of our help and protection from wasteful practices like shark finning for shark fin soup and shark fishing.

Sungai Designs

ABOUT

Born from 2,000 plastics bags rescued in Indonesia's rivers, collected by our non-profit sister organisation, Sungai Watch, each chair tells a tale of possibility. This isn't just any material - it's a testament to show that we can protect our planet - one up-cycled plastic bag at a time.

Washing

The plastic bags we use go through an intensive cleaning process, thoroughly washing and removing any remnants from their past. Next, through shredding and heat-pressing methods, 2,000 bags are transformed into hard, durable sheets, forming the foundation of this contemporary chair.

Scultping

Harnessing the precision of CNC technology, the sheets are intricately sculpted into a series of parametric panels that make up the backbone of this chair. Designed to optimise both comfort and style, every panel is thoughtfully crafted through innovation to be as sustainable as possible, leaving no offcuts behind.

Assembly

Our chairs are carefully polished and assembled by our talented artisans. The panels are seamlessly fused together, creating an illusion of floating elegance. Sungai Design stands for more than just furniture; it's about meaningful craftsmanship and ethical practices, all using Bali river plastic. Every chair emerges from the collective passion of a dedicated team, wanting to leave our rivers cleaner than we found them.

Action Through Design

We set out to build a company that puts the planet first by celebrating Bali River Plastic as a material to our products. By up-cycling Bali River Plastic, Sungai Design is paving the way for a new era of sustainable design and products.
